Cornea

Cornea is the transparent front portion of the eye that permits light to enter the eye and focus on the retina. Normally crystal clear, it can become cloudy or misshapen, causing partial or total blindness.
In India alone 15 million people are blind, out of which about 3 million suffer due to corneal blindness. The major causes for this are infections, injuries, malnutrition, congenital disorders, etc. The pathetic situation is that a majority of them belong to the younger age group. Fortunately, these diseased corneas causing blindness can now be replaced successfully through transplantation (medically termed keratoplasty) using human donor corneas.
